How Can Municipalities Address Conflicts When Redesigning Streets?

The Conflictedstreets project explores the resistance to change that often occurs when streets are redesigned to be more pedestrian, cyclist and public transport friendly. In an interview, Tom Rye, Professor at Molde University College, shares four lessons learned that municipalities could use when trying to, for example, remove parking spaces: 

1. When faced with protests, consider lifting those voices that aren’t the loudest
2. Communicate reasons for and benefits from the project, and do it early
3. Allow people to see in reality how a change in a street works in practice, like an experiment
4. Addressing fears and listening to concerns of businesses, residents, and even politicians
